Personal
Ponies began in 1986 as founder Marianne Alexander’s dream
to provide “differently able” children with
  “something
special in their lives to love and care for, [an] equine version of
the Velveteen Rabbit.” But over the past twenty
years, Personal Ponies has grown into a registered 501©3
nonprofit organization staffed by a network of volunteers in more
than 30 states.
Today, over 800 Personal Ponies serve differently able children
nationwide. The ponies are trustworthy companions to toddlers through
teens who are confined to wheelchairs, who are blind or deaf, or
who have cerebral palsy, Down Syndrome, spina bifida, cancer, leukemia,
or autism. They are also friends to children who have suffered disabling
injuries in fires or automobile accidents, who have emotional or
behavioral disorders caused by abuse, neglect, or abandonment, and
those who have defective hearts or failing organs.
At Personal Ponies of Massachusetts, as State Coordinator Mackenzie
Zahara explains, our job is to “bring smiles, shining moments,
and a little magic one pony at a time!” We help place ponies
with differently able children across the state, but, as part of
that mission, we also sponsor community outreach programs, offer
pony-centered activities for children, provide training for volunteers,
and coordinate with and support pony breeders and host families.
